Why Irish Citizenship is More Than Just a Passport

Obtaining Irish citizenship can hold many benefits and is often a highly prized goal for people with Irish ancestry. Some of the benefits of becoming an Irish citizen include, the right to live, work, and travel freely within Ireland and the European Union; connecting with your Irish heritage, participating in cultural traditions, exploring family history, or even owning property in Ireland; educational benefits in Ireland and the European Union including potentially lower tuition fees at universities throughout Europe compared to non- European Union international rates; Ireland is known for its high quality of life, robust health care system, and political stability. The above are just some of the benefits of becoming an Irish citizen.

Your Options for claiming Irish citizenship through descent

McEntee Law Group can help you in your Irish citizenship journey. There are three ways to obtain Irish citizenship through descent. For options 2 and 3, you will need to apply to be entered onto the Foreign Birth Registration (“FBR”) first to establish your Irish citizenship through descent. Once this stage is complete, you are an Irish citizen and you can apply for an Irish passport.

1. Your Parent Was Born in Ireland

If your parent was born in Ireland before January 1st, 2005, you are automatically an Irish citizen.

2. Your Parent is an Irish Citizen

If your parent was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth but not born in Ireland, you can apply to become an Irish citizen

3. Your Grandparent was born in Irelend

If you have an Irish-born grandparent, you can apply to become an Irish citizen
